A small but eager group of young hockey players in Renfrew now have a taste of what skill training is like at the pro level.
A small group of kids from St. Joseph’s Catholic High School got to train with former NHL player John Chabot, who took them through a gauntlet of drills at Renfrew’s myFM Centre on Wednesday afternoon.
Chabot says the players were receptive to his main lesson: finding areas where your skills can flourish and not letting opponents dictate the play.
He explains that he’s no stranger to sharing his knowledge thanks to his work assisting undersevered indigenous youth through his First Assist charity.
Chabot also got the chance to speak with students at a number of local schools ahead of taking to the ice, noting that there’s one main thought that he hopes everyone who he met on Wednesday takes home with them.
Chabot later completed his tour of the region in Pembroke, working with players from Bishop Smith Catholic High School on Thursday.
He says that it’s always nice to come back to the Valley, noting that his son played in Junior B in the area growing up.
