Here’s an all-too-familiar tale from the winter of 2023-24: people misjudging ice conditions- with consequences.
The most recent episode dates from last Wednesday when a foursome of ice fishers became stranded on a fractured ice sheet a kilometre off shore on Wellers Bay.
OPP, Fire and Rescue, and a 424 Search and Rescue Chopper were involved. Two were saved by boat, and the second pair by helicopter.
Police say that while knowledge of ice conditions may help, no ice is safe ice, and this week’s mild weather makes the ice even less stable.
Practice safety for yourself and preach it to your kids.
