On March 5th, Jody Wilson-Raybould, the former Federal Justice Minister and Indigenous Author, engaged with Algonquin College staff, students, and community representatives. Her central focus revolved around genuine reconciliation and empowering individuals to serve as catalysts for transformative change.
She delved into the nuances between performative and symbolic reconciliation versus actions that genuinely make a difference.
Wilson-Raybould conveyed the essence of true reconciliation for Indigenous communities to the audience.
Wilson-Raybould stressed that authentic reconciliation requires commitment. She urged the audience to adopt the role of “inbetweeners,” dismantling silos ingrained in colonialism and actively addressing the imperatives of our shared future. She implored the audience to connect with themselves and actively promote the ideals of genuine reconciliation.
To express gratitude for her insightful presentation on this pressing topic, Mayor Ron Gervais presented Jody with a painting of Pembroke at the conclusion of the event.
