Petawawa Council has updated its land acknowledgment, a statement regularly made at the beginning of council meetings. The revised version aims to bring a fresh perspective, departing from the long-standing wording. Mayor Gary Service shared that they will also incorporate one of the 94 calls to action in each meeting until all are covered.
Mayor Service highlighted that he won’t be the exclusive reader of the acknowledgment, allowing other council members an opportunity to participate. Council member Lisa Coutu presented the updated acknowledgment, along with the first call to action, during the March 11th council meeting.
This initiative underscores the council’s commitment to recognizing traditional lands, fostering reconciliation, and strengthening ties with Indigenous communities. It reflects their dedication to raising awareness about Indigenous history, culture, and rights, with a shared commitment to building a fair and equitable future for all Canadians.
