An Ottawa Valley senior recently honoured with a provincial award was recognized at Renfrew County Council.
Lorenz Kelo of North Algona Wilberforce, winner of the Ontario Senior Achievement Award, was at the March session to receive a certificate, presented by Warden Peter Emon and County Councillor James Brose.
Kelo, who previously served 28 years as a municipal councillor, has spent more than 25 years volunteering for causes close to his heart, including the Rankin Recreation Association with property maintenance and fundraising events; the Eganville and District Seniors Citizen Needs Association as a driver for Meals on Wheels, driving twice a week to reach isolated, at-risk seniors; and later as the chair of Home Support Services.
He was humble as he thanked council for the recognition.
“This has been a whirlwind month for me. I never thought I’d get to Toronto to the Legislative Assembly. I never thought I’d get recognized the way I am, and I really don’t think I did that much,” he said.
He said volunteering is satisfying work.
“To see the looks of the people you deliver meals to, it’s very satisfying,” he said. “I’ve been enjoying it and I intend to keep on going,” he said.
