The Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment actively participated in the annual Canada Road Safety Week, held from May 14 to May 20, 2024. This collaborative effort among Canadian Police Services aimed to address high-risk driving behaviors jeopardizing road safety for all users.
During the seven-day campaign, OPP officers focused on targeting “The Big 4” factors contributing to personal injury collisions: impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and lack of occupant restraint. Aggressive driving behaviors encompassed speeding, unsafe lane changes, and tailgating.
Results from the campaign indicate a significant enforcement effort by the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP. Officers laid 97 speeding charges under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA), including two stunt driving charges. Additionally, one motorist faced charges under the HTA for failure to wear a seatbelt, and another driver was charged under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act (CAIA). Furthermore, three impaired driving charges and one prohibited driving charge were laid under the Criminal Code (CC).
Despite the conclusion of the campaign, the OPP stresses its ongoing commitment to traffic safety enforcement and education throughout the year. Road users are reminded to adhere to traffic laws and drive responsibly to ensure the safety of all individuals on the roadways.
