The Pembroke and Laurentian Valley Handi-Bus is enhancing its services with extended hours and improved door-to-door pickup, thanks to the acquisition of a new passenger van. The purchase was made possible through funding from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, with contributions from both the federal and provincial governments. The City of Pembroke received up to $119,000 in funding, covering most of the cost, while the remaining $43,338.75 was funded through the Transit Gas Tax grant.
The new eight-passenger van replaces an older model and increases service capacity without requiring a special driver’s license. Its smaller size also facilitates more efficient door-to-door service. The Handi-Bus will now include Sunday service from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“The new Handi-Bus ensures that Pembroke residents of all abilities can continue to access reliable transportation,” said Ric Bresee, Parliamentary Assistant to Ontario’s Minister of Transportation.
Operated by the Friends of the Disabled, the Handi-Bus has been serving seniors and individuals with mobility challenges since 1989. The new van will enable the service to better meet the needs of the community.
