For years, the Agnew family has supported and loved their Ottawa Valley community and now, the community is embracing them as they deal with a tragic, immeasurable loss.
Steve Agnew, who died last week in an early morning house fire in Eganville, is being remembered as a kind and gentle soul who would do anything for anybody. Steve was a well-known musician, owner of Agnew Construction, and he and wife Jackie are long-time community boosters.
Ottawa Valley Country Music Hall of Famer Rick Rogers said he is honoured to have called Steve a friend.
Rogers, who met Steve through music and performing and grew to be a close friend, said his heart goes out to Steve’s family and friends as they come to terms with the loss. He and wife Kathleen recently joined Steve and Jackie on a trip to Winnipeg where they took a float plane up north, playing music and fishing, two of the things they liked doing best.
Over the years, Rogers has come to love and appreciate the whole Agnew family, who are reeling from this tragedy but grateful to all those offering support.
They are leaning on each other and those around them, said Rogers.
The family is taking solace in the countless condolences, well wishes, and shared memories of an amazing guy, said Rogers.
Music was a unifier for Rogers and his late friend, who recorded numerous songs that a lot of people relate to and enjoy and will continue to enjoy, said Rogers.
In fact, the two friends, along with Jeff Nystrom, had been working on a new Steve Agnew album over the last six months. Unfortunately, said Rogers, they hadn’t completed it before Steve’s death. Completing at least some of that project is something Rogers said he’d like to do.
Rogers says he is honoured to have known Steve, been exposed to his considerable musical talent, and to have called him a friend.
Steve’s celebration of life will be taking place in Eganville at the Eganville Legion on Friday, Sept. 6 from 1 to 4 p.m, and following the service, there will be a few hours for Steve’s musical family to take the stage and share a song.
Rogers invited anyone interested in performing to reach out to him on Facebook.
In memory of Steve, donations can be made to the Emily Agnew Memorial Fund by cheque or by e-transfer to jackieagnew46@gmail.com with a memo stating ‘donation to the Emily Agnew Memorial Fund.’ Tributes, condolences and donations may be made online at www.zohrfuneralhome.com .
