As students return to school, the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Animal Centre is seeking volunteers to join its AnimalSmart team and deliver humane education in local classrooms.
The AnimalSmart program offers free presentations for Grades 1-8, aiming to instill empathy, responsibility, and a connection with animals. This fall, the program will introduce a new theme, “Animals in the Community,” and is in need of more volunteers.
Cory Philip, an AnimalSmart volunteer who has reached over 325 students across 17 classes, describes the experience as deeply rewarding. “It’s fulfilling to see students engage with their pets, recognize that animals have emotions, and learn how to care for them,” Philip says.
The Ontario SPCA relies on volunteers to run the AnimalSmart program. No teaching background is required; volunteers will receive training and mentoring from experienced educators.
Nina Alexander, Humane Education Manager at the Ontario SPCA, emphasizes the importance of the program: “We aim to show kids the value of animals and how to treat them with kindness and respect. AnimalSmart is a fun way to encourage kids to think about animal welfare.”
