The Township of Laurentian Valley is set to open its newest community park, Elgin Street Park, at 622 Elgin Street. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will took place on September 24, 2024, at 3:00 p.m..
The park features a variety of play structures, including areas for children aged 1-5 and 5-12, as well as a swing set with four swings, one of which is accessible. Additional play elements include a retro rocker, 2-user airplane motion toy, barrel spinner, sensory panel, and a swirly spinner. The park also offers an accessible shade table and two benches, providing spaces for relaxation and enjoyment.
This project was made possible with funding from the Federal Economic Development Agency of Southern Ontario, through the Canada Revitalization Community Fund. The development was further supported by Mr. James Lapointe, who dedicated land from a potential future subdivision to facilitate the construction of the park. A memorial stone near the playground honors the memory of Mr. Lapointe’s late son, Zachary Lapointe.
Mayor Steve Bennett expressed his gratitude, stating, “The Township sincerely thanks Mr. Jimmy Lapointe for his generous efforts to help expand recreation opportunities within Laurentian Valley.”
The project also benefited from the efforts of Willow Ridge Subdivision residents and surrounding communities, who rallied for a neighborhood playground. Township staff worked alongside the Willow Ridge Committee to identify suitable land and the types of play structures that would best serve local families.
Elgin Street Park promises to be a new focal point for both current and future residents, offering a welcoming space for children, caregivers, and the entire community.
