Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), Canada’s leading nuclear science organization, has announced a new round of proposals for its Canadian Nuclear Research Initiative (CNRI). CNL President and CEO Jack Craig made the announcement during the Generation IV and Small Reactor Conference (G4SR-5) in Ottawa this week.
CNRI is designed to help researchers share knowledge, optimize resources, and access CNL’s expertise at the Chalk River Laboratories. It aims to advance small modular reactor (SMR) and advanced reactor (AR) designs in Canada. This year, CNRI has expanded to include research on clean energy, with a special focus on fusion-based research, following the success of CNL’s Fusion Day 2024 event.
“CNRI continues to be one of our most successful programs, accelerating the development of innovative reactors,” said Jack Craig. “We’re also expanding into fusion energy research, which could transform clean energy in Canada.”
Proposals for projects in areas like nuclear fuels, advanced materials, reactor safety, and fusion-related research are now being accepted until December 20, 2024. CNL will select projects in the spring of 2025 after a thorough review process.
CNL’s collaboration with companies like Westinghouse Electric and Kairos Power has already helped advance several nuclear technologies. This year’s expansion into fusion-based research reflects Canada’s growing focus on clean energy innovation.
