Following a series of thefts from unlocked vehicles, the Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment urges residents to take precautions to protect their property.
On October 17, police responded to a break-in at a clothing store on Howard Street in Pembroke, where items including cash, electronics, and clothing were stolen. Later that morning, reports of thefts from unlocked vehicles in the 500 block of Irving Street were received, with items such as gym bags, cash, and electronics taken.
In response to these incidents, the OPP emphasizes that an unlocked door or open window can be an invitation to thieves. They encourage vehicle owners to adopt the following safety measures:
- Roll up your vehicle windows: Ensure all windows are closed.
- Lock your vehicle and pocket the keys: Always secure your vehicle when not in use.
- Park in well-lit areas: Choose bright locations to deter potential thieves.
- Avoid leaving valuables in plain view: Store items out of sight to minimize temptation.
The OPP advises homeowners to apply similar security measures to their residences, garages, sheds, and outbuildings. As the saying goes, “Lock it or lose it!”
Benjamin Lush, a 39-year-old Petawawa resident, has been charged with multiple offenses related to these thefts, including break and enter, theft under $5,000, and mischief. Residents are reminded to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the OPP. Your proactive measures can help prevent theft in our community.
