This fall, North Algona Wilberforce Township is pleased to offer free canning and food preservation workshops at the Golden Lake Community Hall. Supported by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, these workshops will teach participants traditional methods such as canning, fermenting, and pickling. Attendees will have the opportunity to take home their creations and contribute to the local food bank.
The workshops will be led by local experts who will guide participants in using produce from the Golden Lake Community Garden, which is maintained by dedicated volunteers. This garden has become a cornerstone of the township’s efforts to improve food security and promote community engagement. Councillor Melvin Berndt expressed pride in the initiative, stating, “It’s amazing to see everything growing there in the park.”
In addition to the preservation workshops, the program will feature weekly social dancing led by Chanda Leahy, starting at the end of October. The workshops and activities are free of charge, with all materials provided thanks to the New Horizons for Seniors Program grant. No experience is necessary, and community members with skills are encouraged to join and share their knowledge. Participants will create items to take home, while additional produce will be donated to the food bank, fostering a spirit of community and support.
