Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), Canada’s leading nuclear science and technology organization, celebrated over 100 employees at its 2024 Awards of Excellence ceremony, held at Germania Hall in Pembroke on November 18. The annual awards honor individuals and teams for their exceptional contributions to CNL’s mission, including advances in nuclear science, safety, decommissioning, and Indigenous engagement.
CNL plays a vital role in providing nuclear technology products and services, addressing Canada’s nuclear liabilities, and revitalizing the Chalk River Laboratories campus. This year’s award winners were recognized for their work in developing new technologies, improving health and safety, completing commercial projects, and more.
Jack Craig, President and CEO of CNL expressed his gratitude for the recipients, saying, “Thanks to this year’s recipients, CNL is a safer place to work, and we’ve advanced innovative technologies in nuclear and environmental sciences. We’ve also helped address Canada’s nuclear legacy and provided exceptional services to our customers.”
The awards are divided into two categories: the D.F. Torgerson Discovery Award and the Distinguished Merit Award. The D.F. Torgerson Discovery Award recognizes innovative solutions, significant research achievements, and new business initiatives. This year, over 40 employees were honored for projects such as the development of Actinium-225 medical isotopes and advancements in waste management technologies.
The Distinguished Merit Award celebrates contributions to productivity, safety, partnerships, and environmental initiatives. More than 60 employees received this award for accomplishments, including the development of multi-physics codes for small modular reactors and the revitalization of CNL’s Travelling Flux Detector System.
Craig concluded, “These accomplishments help ensure the safe and reliable production of nuclear energy, support cancer treatment advancements, and improve environmental health. I’m incredibly proud of our talented and dedicated team.”
