The Pembroke Regional Hospital Auxiliary has raised $50,000 towards the purchase of specialized Bone Mineral Density (BMD) equipment, bringing them closer to their goal of acquiring a $150,000 machine needed for osteoporosis and bone health assessments. The donation was presented at the hospital’s Fall Luncheon & Fashion Show and includes $27,000 from Delta Bingo & Gaming Pembroke and $23,000 from funds raised through the Auxiliary’s Gift Shop, Mural Café, and other fundraising efforts.
This new equipment will allow Pembroke Regional Hospital (PRH) to provide in-house BMD scans, which are crucial for diagnosing osteoporosis and other bone health issues, especially for seniors and individuals at high risk for bone fractures. The BMD procedure, a non-invasive test using low-intensity X-rays, takes 15 to 20 minutes and helps assess bone mineral density and detect vertebral fractures.
Diana Gagne, President of the Pembroke Regional Hospital Auxiliary, emphasized the importance of this donation, saying, “Improving access to essential diagnostic services and state-of-the-art equipment has always been a priority for the Auxiliary. With this new commitment, we aim to support our community by ensuring that the latest, vital equipment is available close to home.”
During the fiscal year 2023/2024, PRH performed 1,010 Bone Mineral Densitometry procedures, highlighting the need for this specialized equipment. The Auxiliary’s fundraising efforts are part of a larger mission to support the hospital, having already met its $500,000 pledge for the orthopedics program and upgrades to the inpatient surgical unit.
PRH President and CEO Sabine Mersmann expressed gratitude for the Auxiliary’s continued support, stating, “For over 60 years, the Auxiliary has been a key supporter of local healthcare, helping fund essential equipment and projects that enhance patient care. This equipment will enable us to provide important bone assessments using the latest technology.”
The Pembroke Regional Hospital Auxiliary remains committed to supporting the hospital’s needs and encouraging community involvement. For more information on the Auxiliary’s fundraising efforts or to find out how to volunteer, contact pr@prh.ca.
This donation is a significant step in ensuring that PRH continues to offer the latest technology for diagnosing and managing bone health, ultimately improving patient care in the region.
