As winter weather conditions approach, the Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment is reminding motorists to take extra precautions when driving in adverse conditions. Winter weather, including snow and ice, can affect road safety, requiring drivers to adjust their driving habits and ensure their vehicles are properly equipped for the season.
To stay safe on winter roads, the OPP advises drivers to follow three key safety tips: stay alert, slow down, and stay in control. Winter conditions can change rapidly, so it’s important to drive according to the current road and weather conditions. Reducing your speed when snow, ice, or poor visibility arises can help prevent accidents.
Drivers should also maintain a safe following distance, as longer stopping times may be required in slippery conditions. Visibility is key, so always clean frost and snow off your windows, mirrors, and lights before driving. It’s also a good idea to install four winter tires, replace wiper blades if necessary, and keep plenty of windshield washer fluid in your vehicle.
In addition to these tips, the OPP recommends carrying certain items in your vehicle to be prepared in case of an emergency. Essential items include a charged cell phone, an ice scraper, a snow brush, a small shovel, and sand or salt for traction. Other helpful items are booster cables, road flares, a flashlight, a first aid kit, and extra clothing in case you get stuck or stranded.
“Winter driving requires extra caution, and it’s important to give yourself extra time to reach your destination,” said a spokesperson for the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP. “If conditions are severe, consider postponing or canceling your trip for your safety and the safety of others on the road.”
Before heading out, drivers are encouraged to check current road conditions by calling 5-1-1 or visiting the Ministry of Transportation’s Ontario 511 website for up-to-date information on road closures, weather-related hazards, and more.
By following these safety tips and preparing your vehicle for winter conditions, you can help ensure a safe and smooth journey through the upcoming season.
