On Saturday, November 16, the Petawawa Civic Centre marked its 50th Anniversary with a special celebration. The iconic building, which officially opened on November 16, 1974, hosted a fun-filled day, including an Oldtimers hockey game between the Dynos and the Silver Kings. The Silver Kings won the match 5-3. A special moment during the game was the ceremonial puck drop by Brian Mohns, who also played in the inaugural Oldtimers game 50 years ago.
The anniversary celebration took guests back in time to 1974, a year when “The Exorcist” was the top box office movie and ABBA’s “Waterloo” topped the charts. That same year, Petawawa’s first indoor arena opened its doors, thanks to the vision and efforts of the local community.
The idea for the Civic Centre began in December 1971 when Councillor Robbie Robinson proposed building an arena using funding from the Federal-Provincial Winter Works Program. By 1972, land was purchased, and a dedicated committee was formed to make the dream a reality. With support from local businesses, volunteers, and a series of fundraisers, including a house raffle, the project raised $250,000 of the $450,000 needed.
Notable additions over the years include the library (1975), tennis courts (1980), and the Kinhut building (1983). The Civic Centre has become a central hub for recreation and community activities in Petawawa.
The 50th Anniversary event also acknowledged the many volunteers, local politicians, and contributors who ensured the success and longevity of the Civic Centre. Special thanks were given to the past and present volunteer fundraising bartenders who raised over a million dollars for upgrades and additions, ensuring the facility remains a cherished part of the community for years to come.
