The Ontario government is making efforts to improve healthcare access in rural and northern communities by adding 100 new family doctors, including some in the Pembroke and Petawawa areas. This initiative is part of the Practice Ready Ontario program, which aims to connect over 120,000 people to primary care by 2025.
The program helps foreign-trained doctors become licensed in Ontario more quickly, ensuring they meet the province’s healthcare standards. The first cohort of 28 doctors is already practicing, with Pembroke and Petawawa among the municipalities benefiting from this new healthcare support.
This move is expected to significantly improve healthcare access for many residents in underserved areas, helping to address the ongoing shortage of family doctors in rural and northern Ontario.
