The Algonquins of Pikwakanagan council recently hosted a swearing-in ceremony for the newest member PJ Leroux.
Leroux was chosen in a by-election to replace Coun. Cathy Bernard, who resigned.
The ceremony was held at the Elders Lodge in on Friday, Dec. 13, and included traditional dancers, as well as blessings from Elder Francis Sarazin, who presented Leroux with an eagle feather and a blanket bearing the Seven Grandfather Teachings.
Leroux swore an oath as part of the proceedings.
In addressing the crowd, he pledged to continue to learn and grow in the role.
He was congratulated by Chief Greg Sarazin, who led the ceremony, as well as Brittany Scott, Commissioner of Oaths, who performed the swearing in.
Leroux joined council members, well wishers and the public for a small reception following the ceremony.
