With news of Justin Trudeau’s resignation breaking to start the week – many have already turned their attention to a federal election, whenever that may be.
Brock University Associate Political Science Professor Dr. Stefan Dolgert says Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has managed to overcome the Liberal government, something his predecessors couldn’t do.
As it stands, a non-confidence vote cannot be called until March 24th – which is how long Parliament is prorogued for. During this time, it’s expected the Liberal Party will select a new leader, while other parties will be scrambling to find candidates in the even of an election. If a vote of non-confidence passes, which would need the support of the Conservative Party and NDP, an election would be called.
Dolgert added that the election will be very interesting for Jagmeet Singh and the NDP, as well as the Liberal Party once a new leader is selected.
Trudeau had been Liberal Leader since 2013, and has been the Prime Minister since 2015, winning three elections in that timeframe.
