The OPP West Region is reminding pet owners to leave their animals at home instead of in cold vehicles during the winter months.
Sgt. Ed Sanchuk emphasizes that just like their summer safety messaging, leaving pets in a vehicle during frigid temperatures can have tragic outcomes.
Many people love to bring their pets along wherever they go, however, during the harsh winter weather, the safest place for them is often a warm and comfortable home.
He adds that pet owners need to use common sense when deciding whether to take their pets outdoors.
It’s important to know your dog’s needs and tolerance for the cold and always check the temperature before making outdoor plans to ensure it’s safe for your pet.
If you spot a pet in a vehicle that appears to be in distress, Sgt. Sanchuk has this advice:
The Criminal Code of Canada includes strict penalties for the mistreatment of animals:
- Causing unnecessary suffering: Maximum sentence of 5 years in jail
- Injuring or endangering an animal: Maximum sentence of 5 years in jail
- Neglecting an animal: Maximum sentence of 2 years in jail
The OPP urges everyone to act responsibly and prioritize their pets’ well-being during extreme weather conditions.
