In Petawawa, a proposal for an urban farm on a five-acre property at 255 Murphy Road is gaining attention. The farm, which would offer hyper-local produce, meat, and eggs, was presented to the town council in late October as part of a three-year pilot project. The property owner seeks approval for a temporary use bylaw, allowing the farm to operate for a limited time before possibly applying for a permanent bylaw.
While the plan to grow vegetables and fruit is not controversial, the inclusion of livestock has raised concerns. At the December 16 council meeting, discussions focused on what types and numbers of animals could be raised on the farm, with residents expressing worries about noise, odor, and pests. The farm would potentially house broiler chickens, turkeys, pigs, cows, sheep, goats, and other animals.
Petawawa’s town council is considering a phased approach for livestock, which may address some community concerns. At the meeting, the council expressed general support for the project but emphasized the need for further discussion regarding livestock management.
As the proposal moves forward, the town council is working to balance the benefits of local food production with the concerns of nearby residents.
