Ontarians are receiving their latest Canada Carbon Rebate payments today, providing relief to families while supporting the country’s pollution pricing strategy.
For a family of four, this quarter’s payment amounts to approximately $280, with an annual total of $1,120 from April 2024 to January 2025. Residents in small and rural communities receive an additional 20% top-up to the rebate.
The government says the program ensures the majority of Ontario households, especially low- and middle-income families, receive more money back than they pay into the system, helping ease cost-of-living pressures. Funds collected through pollution pricing stay within the province and are redistributed to residents. Those who pollute less, such as families with fewer vehicles, benefit the most.
Despite criticism of carbon pricing, including claims by Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, the government maintains that the approach does not increase inflation or living costs. Instead, it’s widely recognized as an efficient tool to cut greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change while returning money directly to Canadians’ pockets.
