Every January, Crime Stoppers programs across Canada come together to observe National Crime Stoppers Month. The theme for 2025 is “Empowering Through Education, Preventing Through Action.” This initiative highlights the importance of community, law enforcement, and media partnerships in creating safer environments.
Crime Stoppers aims to educate the public about crime and raise awareness about illegal activities. By promoting the values of safety, empowerment, and inclusion, the program encourages Canadians to take action against crime. One of its key goals is to inspire people to report suspicious or criminal activity anonymously.
The success of Crime Stoppers relies heavily on the support of the community. The organization is volunteer-run and operates as a non-profit charity, relying on public awareness and fundraising efforts. Tipsters who provide information remain completely anonymous and are not required to testify in court. If their tips lead to charges being laid, they could receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
In Renfrew County, Crime Stoppers has made a significant impact. The program has assisted police in laying nearly 1,300 charges, recovering over $750,000 in property and cash, and removing over $4.1 million worth of drugs from the streets. The organization’s slogan, “Crime Doesn’t Pay… But Crime Stoppers Does,” holds true, as the Crime Stoppers Board has approved over $34,000 in rewards.
The collaborative efforts of Crime Stoppers, local law enforcement, and the public continue to play a vital role in making Canadian communities safer. With this year’s theme, “Empowering Through Education, Preventing Through Action,” Crime Stoppers continues its mission to create awareness, encourage action, and protect Canadian values.
