The County of Renfrew is excited to announce a significant infrastructure improvement project at the intersection of County Road 26 (Doran Road) and County Road 51 (Petawawa Boulevard) in the Town of Petawawa. The project, which will involve the construction of a roundabout, has received $2.8 million in funding support and aims to enhance traffic flow, improve safety, and accommodate the area’s growing needs.
The total estimated cost of the project is $5.5 million, with contributions from the County of Renfrew and the Province of Ontario’s Housing-Enabling Core Servicing (HECS) stream of the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program (MHIP). The roundabout is expected to address long-standing traffic congestion at the intersection, which has become a high-traffic area due to population growth and economic development.
Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski expressed his support for the project, emphasizing the positive impact the roundabout will have on road safety and development. “Ensuring ongoing development, especially relating to improving road safety, will have a positive impact for the Town and its residents,” he said.
County of Renfrew Warden Peter Emon also highlighted the importance of the project, saying, “This investment reflects our ongoing commitment to building safer and more accessible roadways for residents and visitors alike.” The roundabout will improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and minimize the likelihood of accidents, especially during peak commuting hours.
Petawawa Mayor Gary Serviss noted that the roundabout will support the expansion of more than 1,400 homes and improve access to key areas, including Garrison Petawawa. “We are excited to see this investment come to fruition, as it will greatly benefit our residents,” he added.
In addition to improving traffic safety, roundabouts help reduce fuel consumption and emissions by allowing vehicles to flow more efficiently. The project aligns with the County’s commitment to sustainable development and promoting economic growth in the region.
The design phase of the project is complete, and construction is expected to begin in 2026, with minor works starting in 2025. Efforts will be made to minimize disruptions to traffic during construction. The roundabout is part of a broader plan for improvements along Petawawa Boulevard, with additional funding opportunities being pursued.
The County of Renfrew thanks its partners, including the Town of Petawawa and the Province of Ontario, for their support in making this project a reality.
