The City of Pembroke is set to introduce an on-demand public transit system, with a three-year pilot project approved by council.
Launching between July 7 and Aug. 5, the service will feature two accessible Dodge ProMasters, plus a backup vehicle. Unlike traditional bus routes, riders can book trips via an app or phone, similar to ride-sharing services.
Deputy Mayor Brian Abdallah calls it a game changer for local residents noting the city’s growing senior population and student presence at Algonquin College.
The fare structure is still being determined, but a tax levy of 2.03% will help fund operations. Expected to serve 1,200 to 1,700 riders monthly, the service will run six days a week and extend to Walmart in Laurentian Valley.
