As winter weather conditions, including significant snowfall, are forecasted for the Upper Ottawa Valley, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding motorists to stay safe on the roads. With winter driving presenting additional challenges, the OPP urges drivers to stay alert, slow down, and stay in control to ensure everyone arrives at their destination safely.
The OPP advises motorists to adjust their driving to match current road and weather conditions. When adverse weather arises, reducing speed and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles is essential, as longer stopping distances may be required. Ensuring that your vehicle is visible by cleaning frost and snow off windows, mirrors, and lights is also crucial.
To further prepare for winter driving, the OPP recommends installing four winter tires, using good wiper blades, and keeping windshield washer fluid topped up. Additionally, drivers should give themselves extra time to reach their destination and consider postponing or cancelling trips if conditions worsen.
Motorists are encouraged to carry emergency items in their vehicles, such as a charged cell phone, an ice scraper, snow brush, small shovel, and a traction aid like sand or salt. Other helpful items include booster cables, road flares, fuel line anti-freeze, extra clothing, a blanket, non-perishable food, a flashlight, a first aid kit, and a small tool kit.
Before heading out, drivers can check road conditions by calling 5-1-1 or visiting the Ministry of Transportation’s Ontario 511 website for up-to-date information on provincial highways.
By following these winter driving safety tips, everyone can help ensure safer roads and smoother travel during the winter months.
