Duane Allen, a military veteran and dedicated father, is inspiring change through his determination to fight Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). From April 11 to April 13, Duane will complete his 5th consecutive 4x4x48 Challenge, running 4 miles (6.4 km) every 4 hours for 48 hours to raise funds for DMD research. His goal is to help ensure that Canadians have access to life-changing therapies and, eventually, a cure for this devastating disease.
Over the past four years, Duane has raised an impressive $25,661 for the cause. This year, his fundraising goal is set at $7,900. His mission is deeply personal, driven by the challenges faced by his 15-year-old son, James, who was diagnosed with Duchenne in 2009. Despite the hardships of living with this progressive muscle-wasting condition, James has become a leader in his school, championing accessibility initiatives and pursuing his passion for science and math.
James’ strength and determination inspire Duane to continue pushing for accessible therapies and a cure. “That one breakthrough in research, that’s all we need. It’s all we’re looking for,” Duane says.
This year’s challenge holds special significance, as it marks both Duane’s 5th anniversary of the 4x4x48 Challenge and the 30th anniversary of Defeat Duchenne Canada. For three decades, the organization has been a driving force in DMD research, advocacy, and support for families affected by the disease.
Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a relentless genetic disorder that causes muscle weakness and affects the heart and lungs. While no cure has been found yet, advancements have been made thanks to research efforts, some of which were funded by Defeat Duchenne Canada and its generous donors. Eight therapies have been developed and approved in Europe and the USA, but due to complex regulatory processes, none have been approved in Canada.
“Duchenne is relentless, but so is the strength of families like the Allens. Across the country, we see incredible power and courage from those who refuse to give up—who inspire us all to keep pushing forward, to keep fighting to find that cure,” says Lisa McCoy, CEO of Defeat Duchenne Canada.
Duane is leading a movement, calling on his community to get involved. By supporting the 4x4x48 Challenge, people can turn hope into action and fund vital research toward life-saving treatments and a potential cure for Duchenne.
