
Pembroke Regional Hospital is excited to host a free public education session aimed at raising awareness about stroke prevention, treatment, and recovery. The event, titled “Understanding Stroke,” will take place on Thursday, April 24th, from 6-8 p.m. at The Best Western Pembroke Inn & Conference Centre. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.
The session will feature a group of expert speakers, including Dr. Chika Offiah, an Internist/Neurologist at Pembroke Regional Hospital (PRH), Hope Proctor, Clinical Stroke Educator, and Lisa McDonnell, Director of the Champlain Regional Stroke Network. The event will also include valuable information stations on stroke risk factors, prevention, treatment, and recovery.
Sabine Mersmann, President and CEO of PRH, will moderate the event alongside Beth Brownlee, Vice-President of Clinical Services and Chief Nursing Executive. Mersmann shared, “Our collaboration with the Champlain Regional Stroke Network and the County of Renfrew Paramedic Service highlights our commitment to providing the community with vital health information.”
The session will cover key topics such as the science of stroke, stroke prevention, treatment, and recovery. Attendees will have the chance to ask questions and connect with organizations like the County of Renfrew Paramedic Service, the Champlain Regional Stroke Network, and the Ottawa Valley Ontario Health Team.
The statistics around stroke are striking: Every five minutes, someone in Canada is diagnosed with a stroke, and the risk increases rapidly after age 55. With stroke being the third leading cause of death in Canada, this event offers an important opportunity to learn about prevention and management.
