The Town of Petawawa’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Advisory Committee has revealed a new logo designed by local university student Michael Xavier. The design was chosen through a community-wide logo contest held in 2024, with dozens of creative submissions—many from local students. A judging panel, including Mayor Sweet and other community representatives, selected Xavier’s design as the winner. He was awarded a $250 prize.
The new logo, now a symbol of the EDI Committee’s mission, features the Petawawa water tower, surrounded by raised fists to represent unity, strength, and collective action. At the Committee’s request, Michael also added a bear claw to the tower in recognition of Petawawa’s location on the unceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation. This detail also reflects the Town’s ongoing commitment to truth and reconciliation.
The logo will be used on upcoming EDI Committee materials, including lawn signs and stickers. It will also be featured at Petawawa Showcase 2025, where residents are encouraged to visit the Committee’s booth, share feedback, and learn more about inclusion efforts.
Starting April 26, the EDI Committee will officially launch its Commitment to Inclusion Agreement Program, inviting local businesses to take part. Participating businesses will agree to a set of guiding principles aimed at creating safe, respectful, and inclusive spaces for everyone, especially those from marginalized communities. In return, they will receive a vinyl decal for their storefront and access to training through local organizations.
On April 28, the Committee will begin selling “Stronger Together” lawn signs at Town Hall for $10. These signs are part of a campaign to promote community unity during Pride Month in June. The slogan reflects the Committee’s mission to build a welcoming and supportive Petawawa for all.
The EDI Committee’s initiatives continue to grow, and all community members are encouraged to get involved, offer ideas, and show their support for equity and inclusion in Petawawa.
