On Monday, March 31, Shaw Woods Outdoor Education Centre received one of two beautifully refurbished entrance signs, thanks to the hard work of students from Bishop Smith Catholic High School.
The signs were originally damaged in October 2024 when a vehicle hit the entrance gateway, making it necessary to remove them. Earlier this year, during a Shaw Woods Board meeting, members discussed what could be done with the damaged signs. Damian Solar, the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board representative on the SWOEC Board, had a creative idea — why not have local students bring them back to life?
The project was given to the Senior Construction Technology class at Bishop Smith. Within weeks, the signs were delivered to the school, and the students got to work. The hands-on project gave them valuable experience in woodworking, restoration, and teamwork.
“This is a great example of how our partnerships with the school boards can benefit both the students and Shaw Woods,” said Fred Blackstein, Site and Building Chair at Shaw Woods Outdoor Education Centre. “The Board of Directors at Shaw Woods is very appreciative of the excellent work by the students and their teachers.”
Damian Solar added, “The students learned a great deal about what was needed to clean up the old, weathered signs and refinish them so that they will serve Shaw Woods for years into the future. The students also appreciated the opportunity to give back to the community through the project.”
The collaboration highlights the value of community partnerships and hands-on learning. The second refurbished sign is expected to be delivered soon, proudly marking the entrance to Shaw Woods once again.
