The Township of Laurentian Valley is currently accepting registrations for community gardens. Two community gardens with a total of 34 garden plots are available at the Shady Nook Recreation Centre and Alice & Fraser Recreation Centre.
In 2021, the Township was successful in securing a grant through the County of Renfrew for $2,000 and built two welcome/bulletin signs, one at each garden location, that will allow gardeners to share information, gardening tips and allow for the possibility of a seed exchange in the 2022 season.
Fees are $10 for an 8’x12’ or $20 for a 12’x12’ garden bed. Subsidies can be offered to those who cannot afford the plot fees but wish to grow a garden.
All proceeds are donated to the local food bank. Last year the garden memberships allowed for a donation of $395 to the St. Joseph’s Food Bank.
Depending on the weather, gardens will be open for planting starting the May long weekend (May 22, 2022).
