Being the only active boxing coach in the area, Coach J runs the Pembroke Boxing Club in downtown Pembroke and has roughly 20 boxers who regularly compete in competitions, along with close to 100 recreational boxers under his belt. Coach J stresses that those who wish to join the boxing universe, generally become an active runner as well. Half the battle is cardio. Burgoyne says that it’s always been his dream to have a full training facility where athletes can develop their skills, but also stay in physical shape. That’s why he and his team have been working to develop a full scale fitness gym in the basement of their facility. He says the most important attribute to anyone who wants to get into boxing, or simply working to better their health is dedication. Going back to cardio, Coach J says stamina is the most important aspect of any combat sport. Jason is also a military veteran who left the military on medical leave back in 2016. Since then, he’s devoted his life to helping people passionate about combat sports and overall, just being healthy.
