The City of Pembroke’s Parks & Recreation Department is thrilled to announce its collaboration with Bogie’s Bar once again to host the Jim Sloan Memorial Ball Hockey Tournament. Set to take place at the Pembroke Memorial Centre on May 25th, 2024, at 9 am, the event promises a day filled with sportsmanship and community spirit.
Jim Sloan, a beloved figure in Pembroke, left an indelible mark on the community through his tireless efforts. Instrumental in establishing Bogie’s Bar at the Pembroke Memorial Centre, Sloan also served on various committees, organized numerous community events, and dedicated himself to the Pembroke Police force when not volunteering. Following a prolonged illness, Sloan passed away in 2018, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that makes him the perfect namesake for this tournament.
This year, the tournament introduces three main divisions to accommodate players of all ages and skill levels. The junior division welcomes participants aged 7 to 12, the intermediate division caters to those aged 13 to 15, and the open division invites players aged 16 and above. Each game will feature twenty minutes of 4-on-4 action, with goalies included. Teams must consist of a minimum of 5 players and a maximum of 10 players, with registration fees varying by division: $130 per team for the open division, $105 per team for the intermediate division, and $80 per team for the junior division. The registration deadline is May 21st at 4 pm, and teams must pay to play, with each guaranteed three games. The ultimate prize, the Hockey Town Cup, awaits the winners of each division, alongside prize bags for every player on the victorious teams.
In a gesture honoring Sloan’s dedication to youth sports, all proceeds from the tournament will benefit BGC Pembroke to support local sports initiatives. Sloan’s longstanding involvement with the Boys & Girls Club of Pembroke and his passion for nurturing young athletes make this allocation particularly meaningful.
To register, team captains or parents can sign up through the online booking system, selecting the appropriate division under the activities tab. For online registration, it’s crucial to ensure that the child is part of the household profile. Alternatively, registration is available at the Parks and Recreation Office.
With a blend of competition, camaraderie, and community support, the Jim Sloan Memorial Ball Hockey Tournament promises to be a fitting tribute to a remarkable individual while championing youth sports in Pembroke.
