May 7 marks National Child and Youth Mental Health Day, part of Children’s Mental Health Week from May 6 to May 12, 2024. The Phoenix Centre, in partnership with Children’s Mental Health Ontario, calls for community support to raise awareness about child and youth mental health.
Recent data shows four of the top ten hospitalizations among 5 to 17-year-olds in Ontario are due to mental health challenges. Despite new investments, a shortage of mental health professionals continues to strain care for children and their families.
Sue Kennedy, Executive Director of the Phoenix Centre, urges open conversations to destigmatize challenges and advocate for accessible care. The center serves over 1,500 clients annually but notes many others are still waiting for support.
Celebrate Children’s Mental Health Week and National Child and Youth Mental Health Day by promoting accessible mental healthcare for children and youth. For resources, visit cmho.org or phoenixctr.com. Follow #KidsCantWait, #MentalHealthWeek, and #CMHW2024 for more.
