A new petition addressing the opioid crisis in Pembroke is gaining traction in the Ottawa Valley. Named “Mandate Decisive Action And Fight the Opioid Crisis in Pembroke,” the petition was initiated on July 2nd and has already garnered over 1,100 signatures.
The mission statement states: Pembroke, Ontario, was once a peaceful town, revered for its natural and historical beauty. Unfortunately, Pembroke’s tranquility is now marred by the distressing rise of the opioid addiction crisis. Our streets are crawling with addicted individuals, and it has become part of our every day life. We tense up, clutch our children and hold our breath as we pass them by on Pembroke Street. This unfortunate reality completely undermines all of the revitalization efforts being put towards our downtown core. We should not have to fear bringing our children to beautiful recreational areas for fear of them being exposed to addiction and drug paraphernalia. Needles have been found at The Waterfront, from The Pembroke Marina to Riverside Park. The CBC has chillingly identified Pembroke amongst the top five Ontario cities for opioid-related deaths. The local residents are desperate and feel ignored, our first responders lack the resources to support everyone adequately and our local small businesses are struggling. We refuse to stand idly by as this is our home. This is a resounding cry for swift and effective action. Therefore, we urge our political leaders to acknowledge the serious impact of the opioid crisis and work towards decisive, purposeful initiatives. Let’s bring Pembroke back to its peaceful glory, free from the shadows of addiction. We deserve better, Pembroke deserves better. Please sign this petition to encourage our leaders to take the necessary steps to curb this critical situation. What they are doing is not enough.
