On October 3, 2024, the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) officially launched the École communautaire citoyenne program at École secondaire catholique Franco-Cité in Ottawa. Joined by city councillor Marty Carr, the program aims to enhance citizen engagement and strengthen community ties within CECCE schools.
The program awards certification to schools based on their level of participation—bronze, silver, gold, and platinum—recognizing their contributions to environmental citizenship, social involvement, and Francophone pride.
Twelve schools participated in the 2023-24 pilot project, organizing initiatives like “Mon premier Noël au Canada” to help newcomer families and fundraising events such as “Unis pour CHEO,” which raised over $3,000 for CHEO research.
CECCE Chair Johanne Lacombe and Director of Education Marc Bertrand praised the program’s ability to foster leadership and citizenship skills, benefiting both students and the broader Francophone community.
More than 4,500 students have already been involved, with plans for further collaboration between schools and local organizations.
