The City of Pembroke will recognize Paralympic bronze medalist Jolan Wong for her outstanding achievements in sitting volleyball by presenting her with a Key to the City. Mayor Ron Gervais will make the presentation during the Pembroke Lumber Kings game at the Pembroke Memorial Centre on Sunday, October 13.
Wong’s impressive career in sitting volleyball includes bronze medals at the 2015 and 2019 Parapan American Games, a silver medal at the 2022 World Para Volleyball Championship, and most recently, a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. She has been a member of Canada’s national sitting volleyball team since 2008 and was named ParaSport Ontario’s Female Athlete of the Year in 2020.
Wong’s passion for volleyball began in her youth, but her journey took a different turn when she lost her right leg to bone cancer at age 13. Despite the setback, she was introduced to sitting volleyball in high school and has thrived in the sport ever since, competing in numerous international events.
“Jolan Wong is an inspiration to everyone,” said Mayor Gervais. “She is not only a dedicated athlete but also a strong community leader and role model. We are honored to recognize her accomplishments.”
The presentation of the Key to the City is the highest honor a municipality can bestow, symbolizing civic recognition and gratitude for extraordinary achievement. Following the ceremony, Wong will drop the puck to start the 2 p.m. game and will be available for photos and a meet-and-greet during the intermission at the PMC Activity Room.
The community is invited to join in celebrating Wong’s remarkable career and contributions to sport and the community.
