The Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Detachment is reminding drivers that most school buses will be back on the roads starting October 28. So far this school year, only a limited number of buses have been in operation. With the increase in school buses, motorists are urged to exercise caution and allow extra time for their commutes.
According to the Highway Traffic Act (HTA), drivers must stop for any school bus that has its safety lights flashing. This rule applies whether a driver is approaching or following a bus. Vehicles must stop before reaching the bus and may only proceed once the bus moves or the lights are turned off. The only exception is when a driver is on a road with a median; in that case, traffic coming from the opposite direction does not need to stop.
Drivers should be aware that failing to stop for a school bus can result in significant fines. For a first offence, the penalty can range from $400 to $2,000 and will add six demerit points to the driver’s record. Repeat offenders face even steeper fines of $1,000 to $4,000, six demerit points, and possible jail time of up to six months.
In addition to school buses, drivers must also be prepared to yield to student pedestrians and cyclists. Parents are encouraged to discuss road safety rules with their children who walk or cycle to school.
As the school year progresses, the OPP emphasizes the importance of safety for all road users, especially during the busy morning and afternoon school hours.
