The OPP is stressing the need for safety this Halloween as kids will flood the streets knocking on doors and sometimes darting out into traffic.
As children excitedly hunt for treats, drivers should stay alert for little ones on the road and sidewalks. Spokesperson Bill Dickson says drivers can be caught off guard.
Parents can help by encouraging their kids to wear makeup instead of masks, or ensuring that any masks have proper eye and mouth openings. When transporting children between neighborhoods, make sure everyone is buckled up. It’s important to supervise younger kids, even in groups. He says kids can appear out of nowhere.
Kids are reminded to have fun while staying safe. They should never trick-or-treat alone, always going in groups or with an adult. If out with friends, kids should inform their parents of their route and expected return time. Carrying a flashlight and wearing reflective clothing can enhance visibility. As for other areas of concern, Dickson says never let a kid trick or treat alone.
When walking, kids should stick to sidewalks or the edges of the roadway, crossing streets only at crosswalks or intersections. It’s best to stay in familiar neighborhoods and walk, not run, to houses that are lit up. Children should never enter a home to receive treats and should wait for an adult to inspect their goodies before snacking. When it comes to costumes he realizes many won’t wear something light in colour so if you’re darkly dressed, bring a flashlight and try to stay under streetlights. And speaking of “dark.”
Final note: Always make sure you check your child’s candy before they eat any of it. Dickson says they still get reports of people who have tampered with treats. OPP officers will be in their usual costumes, working to ensure everyone has a safe and happy Halloween.
