From Sollentuna to the NHL, Mats Sundin made a habit of breaking down barriers and overcoming challenges. The Leafs legend has been doing a promotional tour of Ontario, signing copies of his new book ‘Home and Away’.
When asked about why now was the right time to tell his story, Sundin says he had been fielding offers and figured it was time. He’s hopeful his story is enjoyed by not only fans but some of his family members as well.
Still a popular sports figure in Canada and the U.S., Sundin says there are a couple of things he wants readers to get a sense of.
Part of the legacy of the soft-spoken centre is the fact he was the first European player drafted 1st overall in 1989 and also is the longest-serving non-North American born captain in NHL history. He says he’s thrilled with the state of the sport globally but is hopeful there are still new places that will discover the game.
Sundin is still the all-time leader in goals and points for the Maple Leafs and was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in June 2012.
