Petawawa is set to install a special “Remembrance” crosswalk in honour of the community’s military history and those who serve in the Canadian Armed Forces. The initiative comes after Councillor Driscoll shared images on social media of similar crosswalks being installed in other Ontario municipalities. Inspired by these examples, the town’s staff quickly contacted A1 Carp Pavement Marking Limited, the local pavement contractor, to see if a similar tribute could be created for Petawawa.
The proposed crosswalk, featuring the words “Lest We Forget” and a soldier silhouette, will serve as a year-round reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel. The Garrison, a central part of the community, and the area’s rich military heritage make this tribute especially meaningful for residents. The crosswalk will be visible to everyone, ensuring that all can honor those who have served and continue to serve.
The total cost of the “Remembrance” crosswalk is estimated at $9,887.50, including HST. After discussions with the Finance Department, the town confirmed that funding for this unbudgeted initiative will be covered within the 2024 Operations budget.
Petawawa residents can look forward to the installation of this special crosswalk, which will serve as a lasting symbol of respect and remembrance for years to come. The crosswalk will be installed during the week.
