As the holiday season approaches and we begin crossing off names on our Christmas shopping lists, gift cards often emerge as a go-to option for many. They’re quick, easy, and versatile, making them a reliable choice for that special someone. However, shoppers across the country are being warned of a growing scam involving the tampering of gift card barcodes. According to the Retail Council of Canada, a staggering $3.8 million was lost to gift card fraud in 2021 alone.
This particular scam involves crooks swapping out the barcode on a legitimate gift card and replacing it with one linked to their own account. When an unsuspecting shopper purchases the tampered card, the funds are instead loaded onto the scammer’s account, leaving the buyer with nothing. The fraud can be hard to detect, as the tampered cards often appear perfectly normal to the casual observer.
To avoid falling victim to this type of fraud, one possible solution could be opting for virtual gift cards, which are sent electronically via email and aren’t susceptible to barcode tampering. Alternatively, giving cash directly can also eliminate the risks associated with gift card fraud.
If you or someone you know becomes a victim of this scam, it’s crucial to report the incident to both local law enforcement and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. By staying informed and vigilant, we can help reduce the impact of this crime during the holiday season and beyond.
