The County of Renfrew is excited to announce the completion of a new section of the Algonquin Trail through Garrison Petawawa. This significant project creates a scenic, continuous recreational trail from Arnprior to Deep River, linking the Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail (OVRT) from Smiths Falls to Deep River.
The project was led by the County of Renfrew with support from key partners including Garrison Petawawa, Trans Canada Energy (TCE), the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan, the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC), and the Renfrew County ATV Club (RCATV). Their combined efforts were essential in bringing this vision to life.
Built from scratch on a forested section of the TCE corridor, the trail’s construction presented unique challenges. Due to the proximity to the Trans Canada Pipeline, access was limited, and excavation was restricted. However, a forestry tiller was used to prepare the area, and materials such as blast rock, Granular ‘B’, and Granular ‘A’ were used to build the trail, ensuring durability and proper surface strength. Three bridges, originally donated by the OFSC, were also rehabilitated to allow continuous access.
Renfrew County Warden Peter Emon praised the collaboration, saying, “This milestone demonstrates our commitment to developing sustainable recreational infrastructure, and it provides exciting leisure opportunities for everyone in the County.”
The newly completed trail section is now open for use by cyclists, walkers, ATVs, and snowmobiles. A formal ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place in the spring of 2025 to celebrate this major achievement.
