The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is reminding kids not to pout, shout, or cry because Santa Claus will soon be coming to town—and it’s their job to track him.
That was Lt.-General Luke Ahmann from NORAD. Every year, kids around the globe hop online or pick up the phone to check how close Santa is to their homes, eagerly determining whether they need to rush to bed or if they have a bit more time to stay up. While Santa has been delivering presents for centuries, NORAD has been tracking him for only a small portion of that time. It all started because of a very special phone call they received many years ago.
Once they realized they could track Santa using their advanced radar systems, Lt.-General Ahmann said it made perfect sense to keep the tradition alive.
This sophisticated technology is excellent for following Kris Kringle as he zooms across the globe. Occasionally, however, St. Nick himself gives NORAD pilots a delightful surprise.
December 24th is one of the busiest days of the year at NORAD, with countless volunteers coming together to make the magic happen. Thankfully, there are plenty of people across North America filled with Christmas spirit who are more than willing to lend a hand.
According to Lt.-General Ahmann, NORAD has everything prepared for the big day, so kids can rest assured—there’s no need to worry.
