As widely speculated, Ontario voters will be going to the polls next month.
Premier Doug Ford confirmed on Tuesday, that the Honourable Edith Dumont, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, has accepted the advice to sign a proclamation dissolving the 43rd Parliament of the Province of Ontario.
Pursuant to the provisions of the Election Act, the Lieutenant Governor also called for the issuance of writs for the general election to be issued Jan. 29, and named Feb. 27 as the date of Ontario’s next general election.
Doug Ford is expected to kick-off his campaign in Windsor today (Wednesday). The PC leader has spoken recently about the need for a new mandate to battle U.S. President Donald Trump and his plan to implement a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian goods.
Ford’s main political rivals aren’t buying it however. In a statement, NDP leader Marit Stiles said:
“While the people of Ontario are anxious about the grave threat of tariffs, Doug Ford is pursuing his own political gain. People need a Premier who will fight like hell for every single job that’s at risk, not run to the polls over a year early. Doug Ford thinks that he can call an early election to escape his record of failure on housing, health care, education and affordability. We won’t let him. In the coming weeks, we have the power to choose a better future for our province. We have the power to fight back against Donald Trump and turn the page on Doug Ford. Together, we can win an NDP government that’s on your side. The Ontario NDP is ready to win.”
Liberal leader Bonnie Crombie struck a similar tone, saying on X, “at Ontario’s most critical moment, our Premier is choosing to put 500,000 jobs at risk. He only cares about his job, not yours. Trump’s tariff threats are a serious issue, not a political game with you as the pawn – and certainly not an excuse for a $175 million election.”
Political pundits expect this campaign to really be centred on three main issues: Trump/Tariffs, Housing and Health Care.
