Recently announced Seniors Active Living Centre (SALC) funding for Greater Madawaska Township will benefit a number of groups that are already doing great things for the older population, says Rob Weir, the township’s mayor.
Rob Weir told myFM that the up to $55,000 permanent annual funding will benefit organizations including Calabogie 55+, Calabogie Lions, Denbigh-Griffith Lions, DACA Centre, Matawatchan Hall, Greater Madawaska Library, and Calabogie and Area Home Support.
He noted that the township’s involvement will be to enhance and expand the great work that is already being done.
Almost 50 per cent of the township is over 55 years old so this provincial funding is welcome news in terms of supporting that demographic, said Weir.
The SALC funding will allow them to expand programming in a variety of areas, including health and wellness, physical activities and sports, arts and crafts, cards and games, educational activities, dining activities, social activities and transportation services.
Weir said the initiative is a good news story that underscores the township’s commitment to seniors with the hopes they can thrive independently and be confident.
He thanked staff for their work on the project and also expressed gratitude to the many volunteers of the numerous groups that support the area’s older population. He also thanked retiring MPP John Yakabuski and the province for the funding.
A large part of the township’s role will involve getting the word out about all the activities and supports available.
Along with online information, residents will be informed through the mail.
Weir noted the township is a growing community with young people coming into the township and they will not be forgotten, either, with programs for youth in the works and identified as a future focus.
Also set to benefit from new SALC funding are Laurentian Valley, Deep River and Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation.
