As many Ontario residents head out for sunny vacations or ski trips, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are offering helpful tips to ensure your home stays safe and secure while you’re away.
To prevent theft or damage, avoid announcing your vacation plans on social media or posting pictures while you’re away. Arrange for someone to look after your home, ensuring it appears occupied. This includes shoveling walkways, picking up mail, flyers, and newspapers, and putting out garbage for pickup. Trusted neighbors can help monitor your home and should have your contact info in case of an emergency.
Make sure all windows, doors, and garage doors are locked, and leave shades and blinds in the same position as usual. Use timers for lights and install exterior lights with motion detectors. If possible, ask a neighbor to park in your driveway to create the illusion of activity.
Additionally, ensure smoke and burglary alarms are working, and check that any surveillance cameras or doorbell cameras are functioning. It’s also a good idea to catalog your valuables and consider storing them in a safety deposit box. Lastly, review your home insurance policy to make sure you have adequate coverage.
By taking these precautions, you can enjoy your vacation knowing that your home is protected.
