On February 23, members of the Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested a man wanted for failing to appear in court following a shoplifting incident in Pembroke earlier in January. At approximately 12:45 p.m., UOV OPP officers located the suspect at an apartment building on Elizabeth Street in Pembroke.
The accused, 33-year-old Jean-Yves Laviolette, was taken into custody without incident. During the arrest, police seized suspected ecstasy and unmarked cigarettes. Laviolette now faces several charges, including possession of a Schedule I substance (ecstasy), failing to comply with an appearance notice, and possessing unmarked cigarettes under the Tobacco Tax Act.
Laviolette, who still faces charges related to the original shoplifting incident, was released and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on March 4.
