There’s a quick turn-around window for public and Indigenous comments on Canadian Nuclear Laboratory’s Micro Modular Reactor (MMR) project.
The proposed project is being led by Global First Power with the support of Ontario Power Generation and UltraSafe Nuclear Corporation.
The Federal Government announced Wednesday (July 17th) that it has initiated the Environmental Assessment process for the MMR project, and comments on the project description must be submitted to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission by August 14th.
The Micro Modular Reactor is a 15 MW thermal, 5 MW electrical high-temperature gas reactor, seen as an alternative to replace fossil-fuel power plants.
The reactor completed the first phase of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission pre-licensing vendor design review process in January.
To demonstrate the MMR’s viability, a process of site preparation, construction, operation and decommissioning will have to be demonstrated for a single unit at the Chalk River site.
Detailed information about the project will be available in the environmental impact statement, which will be submitted at a later stage of the environmental assessment process.
